Abstract

This article presents a literature review on obesity, which poses a threat to health and has reached global epidemic proportions. Among the main factors that affect this condition are lifestyles, eating habits, psychological and genetic problems, among others. Obesity is classified according to body mass index in grade I, ll, lll and lV. Being its main complications: metabolic syndromes, lung, heart and joint diseases. Its treatment requires a balanced diet which serves a dual function of foreseeing and treating. Therefore, the foods consumed must have the right amounts of macro and micronutrients; according to the age and physical activity of each person. This problem causes physical, psychological and physiological changes that deteriorate health; therefore, diminishing the quality and life expectancy. Therefore, efficient and effective prevention strategies that make people aware of the risks of such a devastating disease are paramount.
