The research work was done through a quantitative and qualitative analysis, using official information and open and closed interviews. The importance of tequio in the process of construction of vernacular housing is manifested. At the same time, vernacular housing is established as an instrument of solidarity and self-production in traditional indigenous communities. As for self-production, it is defined according to different authors and institutions and the most important self-produced housing programs in Mexico are mentioned. The conditions of the territory and the classification of the existing dwelling are established, as well as the adverse conditions that the vernacular architecture supports that favor its disappearance.
